Narrow bridges

Oswestry: Whittington and Baschurch bridges expected to be closed for a day

TWO bridges across a minor river will be closed next week to allow Shropshire Council staff to carry out vital inspections.

On Thursday, September 13, Route C over the Perry Farm Bridge near Whittington will be closed to vehicular traffic while an inspection of the bridge is carried out.

Closing will be between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A spokesperson said: “The inspection requires access equipment to be positioned on the road and, due to the narrow nature of the bridge, this cannot be done without closing the bridge to traffic.

“When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted along the B5009, A495 and local C route using a signed diversion

“Access to the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists on foot will remain available throughout the inspection and access to properties will be maintained until the bridge is closed.

“The closure of the road will be undertaken by Shropshire Council’s maintenance contractor, Kier, and the inspection by the council’s consultant, WSP.

“The inspection is expected to last a day.”

Meanwhile, on Friday September 14, the unclassified road over the Jubilee Bridge near Baschurch will be closed to traffic while an inspection of the bridge is carried out.

Closing will be between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The spokesperson added that access to the bridges will always be open to pedestrians and cyclists, who will have to dismount.
