New Funding to Improve Transportation and Security at Military Installations in Cumberland and Philadelphia Counties

Governor Tom Wolf announced today that new funding has been awarded under the Pennsylvania Military Community Building Commission (PMCEC) to help make transportation and security improvements to military installations in Cumberland and Philadelphia counties.

“Transportation security is critical in all walks of life, but especially so when it involves members of our armed forces,” Governor Wolf said. “This funding will help members of the Pennsylvania Army and Navy travel more efficiently and safely.”

PMCEC provides funding to communities to support and enhance the value of their local military facilities.

Cumberland County Industrial Development Authority received $73,102 for PennDOT to conduct a multimodal transportation study at the US Army War College in Carlisle. The study will be for the improvement of a narrow two-lane road connecting US-11 and Claremont Road which accesses the Carlisle Barracks. The aim is to make travel safer from the Keystone Arms apartments, where many Carlisle Barracks employees reside, to the base.

The Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development received $148,250 for PennDOT to perform a structural, mechanical and electrical inspection of the lift bridge, which spans the Navy-owned Reserve Basin Canal in Philadelphia. The Navy uses the reserve basin for activities conducted by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance (NISMO).

Pennsylvania has 13 military installations supported by the PMCEC. The United States Army War College at Carlisle provides advanced training for senior officers and civilians to prepare them for senior leadership assignments and responsibilities. The Philadelphia Naval Support Activity provides support services to Navy units located at the Philadelphia Naval Dockyard Annex.
