Man suffers burns after setting fire to his house

KOTA KINABALU: A man, believed to be mentally unstable, suffered burns to his body after setting fire to his house in Tambunan district.

Igging Angkangon, 62, is said to have gone mad after an argument with his wife before deciding to burn down his house in Kg Kiukad Lotong at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday June 17.

Keningau OCPD Deputy Superintendent Nor Rafidah Kasim said the man’s actions caused the destruction of his home and a car, and injured himself.

“According to a witness, the man was burned by setting fire to his house,” she said in a statement on Saturday June 18.

Rescuers prepare the victim, who is also a suspect, for treatment at the hospital.

She said the man suffered approximately 40 per cent burns to his body and was later taken to hospital for treatment.

DSP Nor said police received a call about a fire at 10:36 p.m.

“Our team along with firefighters arrived on the scene shortly thereafter,” she said.

Deputy director of operations for the state fire and rescue department, Misran Bisara, said the affected home was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

“There were problems getting there due to the narrowness of the road, forcing our men to change vehicles about 2 km from the main road,” he said.

He said firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control around 11:10 p.m. and operations ceased around 12:10 a.m.

“No other injuries or hazards were reported,” Misran said.
