Living in Northern Michigan most of my life, you can’t avoid the Mackinac Bridge. Even though I’ve crossed the bridge hundreds of times, that doesn’t make it any less scary. If the wind blows, there are five long kilometers of sweaty hands glued to the steering wheel, praying for recovery. If it blows hard enough, they had to close the fourth longest suspension bridge in the country and sometimes even escort you across. Yes, someone will drive your vehicle through “Big Mac” for you. I still remember one windy day in 1989 a Yugo came across the bridge killing the driver. No. Not scary at all unless you are aquaphobic or gephyrophobic.

Being afraid to cross bridges is a real phobia. I know many people who become paralyzed at the thought of this. I can be one of those people when approaching a bridge. I fear that the bridge will collapse, fall or drown me if I cross a body of water. Depending on the height and length of the bridge, my heart can race and my palms get sweaty. Do you have the same fears?

If you are afraid to cross bridges, these are the ones to avoid.

Here are some of the scariest bridges in the United States

Do you suffer from gephyrophobia? This is a serious issue that can alter travel plans at any time. These bridges are some of the scariest in the country to avoid if you have anxiety issues. There are a number of scary bridges in America, but it really depends on what scares you the most, height, water or both.
